Dr. Peters is an internationally renowned chemical engineer with demonstrated leadership in research, academia and management. He served for the past five years at the Battelle Memorial Institute in Columbus, a leading nonprofit applied science and technology development company. During his tenure at Battelle, Dr. Peters was senior vice president and director of the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, where he oversaw a staff of 4,200. Under his leadership, he realigned the laboratory’s research priorities to meet the needs of its diverse customer base. Dr. Peters has held senior academic and administrative positions at leading universities, including Virginia Tech and the University of Kentucky. He holds a doctorate in chemical engineering from the University of Pittsburgh and is a prolific author and lecturer. Dr. Peters has been recognized for his achievements with honors ranging from the National Science Foundation Award to the Oak Ridge Associated Universities’ Outstanding Leadership Award. = Student Research Competitions = [[Student Research Competitions 2009 Award Winners]] = High School Activities = Every year high school students are invited to come to E-Expo not only to view the activities but to compete in design competitions sponsored by some of the student chapters of the professional engineering societies of Speed School. Participating high school students will receive E-Expo T-shirts and free lunch. This year the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) will be sponsoring the two competitions. == ASCE Balsa Wood Bridge Competition == This is a pre-built competition, requiring students to construct a bridge according to the specifications outlined in the rules packet prior to E-Expo. These bridges will then compete based on strength and weight against other submissions at E-Expo. Download Bridge Rules == IEEE Robotics Competition == This is a walk-up or day-of competition. 8 teams of students will be accepted to compete in this brand new event utilizing basic programming principles. Teams will be given a working robot at E-Expo as well as a demonstration of how to use the simplified programming language. The robots will then race to complete an objective against other schools.
